Today has been picture perfect as we woke to clear skies and calm wind. After meeting sev:eral SYC boaters at cocktail hour last night, two guys who have been to the Broughtons several times came on board this morning and gave us all sorts of excllent tips. After breakfast, we went on a hike to Red Granite Lookout which provided fabulous views of the islands at the entrance to Desolation Sound.
This afternoon, we took the dinghy over to see the infamous rock that grounded the 60 footer yesterday. Even the rock sustained damage. We learned that a salvage company towed the boat to Lund after it floated off of the rock last night.
Beautiful scenery! I couldn't imaging boating anywhere else but the Puget Sound, and the weather looks picture perfect. So... how does a yacht with an expensive GPS and charts run aground like that?! Glad it wasn't you guys, but I'm sure Torben didn't sleep well that night just thinking about it. ;-)
ReplyDeleteReally enjoying your blog, and can't wait until Victoria!
P.S. Talked with CSR Marine - sterndrive service completed, water pump serviced, impeller replaced, u-joints balanced, blah blah blah. Replacing cooling system iron next and TC will be good to go!

So glad to hear TC is going to be ready to go for Victoria! I know you'll really enjoy the weekend and we're really looking forward to seeing you there.
ReplyDeleteSo the boat that went aground was a custom built 60' and all we can say is that the people clearly were not familiar with the area and were not paying attention to their charts. Exiting from Cortes Bay, it looks like you can pass right where they were but the charts and GPS tell another story. Everyone on the docks commented that the incident was a wake up call to always be cautious and consult the charts. Lots of unmarked hazards up here. We're off to Dent Island around 11:30--in time to arrive at the Yaculta Rapids at high slack. XXOO
