Through The Gulf Islands (aka The Canadian San Juans) to Nanaimo:
Desolation Sound is a deep water inlet of spectacular fjords. moutains and wildlife. The sound is home to the steepest drop from mountain peak to sea bottom in all of North America. It has many waterfalls cascading into milky green glacial runoff and was named by Captain George Vancouver who explored there in 1792. Vancouver was a rather gloomy character with an attitude problem and he thought the Sound was completely desolate with few redeeming qualities. He wrote in his journal "there was not a single prospect that was pleasing to the eye." Really, George? Are you serious?
